School Choice
Private and public schools have been around since we have been born. Parents always want to give their children the best opportunities, therefore the best schools. Private schools were created to satisfy this. Unfortunately, many educators believed that by creating a separation between private and public schools the students in public schools would feel worse about themselves. They also believed this negative attitude would detriment the students school work. Another aspect of school choice was magnet schools, schools designed for specific purposes like the arts. Also, taxes had always been used to fund public schooling so children attending private schools made taxes for schooling obsolete. This was corrected by having the families pay tax vouchers. The idea of school choice is still controversial today, bringing religion into the equation. This can be seen at our very own high school, with Holy Cross and Scheter.

Noah,
ReplyDeleteDo you think public schools are “worse” than private schools? What does worse mean? In my opinion public schools like Deerfield and New Trier are better educated than many private schools. I think that the background information you have was well written and informative, but I believe that if you add in your own opinion it will be clearer what the true issue is. When you said “the idea of school choice is still controversial today…this can be seen at our own school”, I ask how? How can this be seen through our own school? In our current school there is no religion which shows that parents made the choice to send them to a public school, but how is this controversial? The other question I had was that you said the “tax problem” has been solved through tax vouchers so how does this effect school choice? Does it? Do tax vouchers effect how public schools can run? I believe that these are questions to consider for further clarification of this post. I liked that you gave the opinion of others, but I would suggest to give your own opinion also.
Good Job!
I agree with choosing a school can be a difficult choice, but your post seems to only be concerning elementary, middle, and high school. Have you thought about taking up this discusion to the college level? We are all currently looking for what school to go to next, so it would be interesting to see what you think about public and private colleges.
